Abstract
The present study was carried 311 20 schii3tosomai hepatic f i b r o s i s patients with ascites 12 of’ them were inales and 8 were females. 10 c 2n-tml subjects were a l s o subjected to study. The control group were selected f r o m Tanta City without previous history of schistoson;ias is o r i n f e c t - ive hepatit is. Their age ranged f r o m 17 t o 27 years with a mean value 21.4 years, 5 were males and 5 were feaalea. The cases were f r o m v i l l a g e s around Tanta City w i t h past history of schistosomiasia, and no history o f inf e c t i v e h e p a t i t i s . 4 1 1 oLir cases had. tense usci%es. The age of c a s e s ran~edf r o m 13 t o 60 years wi th a mean value 38.05 years, The cases and the controls were subjected f o r : - Pull c l i n i c a l history, - Proper c l i n i c a l examinat ion. - Urine and s t o o l amijrsis. - Total blood picture, - Liver function t e s t s including: serum b i l i r u b i n d i r e c t and i n d i r e c t , a l k a l i n e phosphatase l e v e l , serum glutamic pyruvic and oxslacet ic trs:l>,aminase, total serum protein and serum albuxin. The serum of cases and controls were exa.iinad by the s i n g l e r a d i a l imun~diffusi~jmne thod o f Idancini f o r determinat ion of alphal ant itrypsin. A l s o a s c i t i c fluids of the sainn patients were examined f o r alphal a n t i t r y p s i n by the previous method. I n the present study the l e v e l of alphal .:ntitxypsin i n the serum of patients and t h a t of controls showed ins i g n i f i c a n t difference and this inay L3 due t o changes i n t h e r a t e o f synthesis and/or chan~esi n t h e rate o f degradation and/or its loss across mealbranes in the kidney o r gut. Alphal a n t i t r y p a i n was present i n the a s c i t i c f l u i d , but i n smaller arcoL.int than i n the sera and t h i s is proba b l y due t o sequestrativri and then dLluti,~no f that a c u t e reactant protein i n the a s c i t i c f l u i d which may a;i;ount up t o 15 litres.
