Abstract

Thromboinodulin is an important natural ailticoagulailt that is present on the luininal surface of the vascular endothelial cells and plays an important role in the regulation of intravascular coagulation. It neutralizes the procoagulant activities of thrombin and is a cofactor for tlxoinbin catalyzed activation of protein C. Althougl~ TM is mainly present on endotllelial cell surfaces, is it also found in the circulating plasma in a modified fonn called pTM that still has antitlu-oinbotic properties.Collagen vascular diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus ertheinatosus are associated with vascular injuries. These vascular illjuries result from depositioil of circulating soluble materials on the endotheluim of the blood vessels called iimnuine complexes. Vascular injuries play an important role in articular and extra-articular inanifestatioils in rheumatoid arthritis and are responsible for various systemic manifestations in SLE.The aim of this work is to study the behaviour of plasina TM in groups of patients with collagen vascular diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus eiythematosus to throw more light on its relation to the activity of these diseases.
