Abstract

The present study showed that there was no relation between the serum neopterin level and the stage of liver affection, although it increases nonsignificantly in cirrhotic patients. On the other hand there were a strong correlation between the serum neopterin level and the renal function tests. The study also revealed that serum neopterin level was elevated in the only case detected to be active CMV infection. In this work no strong association between schistosomiasis and active CMV infection was detected, which is in contrast to the results of other researchers. The endoscopic picture of active CMV patients showed a non-specific picture for the disease, while the histopathological examination revealed a diagnostic Owel’s eye appearance in the mucosa of the CMV infected case. chronic gastritis was the main histopathological finding in the mucosa of the patients and control subjects.
