Abstract

The most I’reyuenl ei~tezopatho;xiic 2, mli sero-i;y$es encountered were: type 055/85 (3.28p), followed Sy 025/i35 (2.94), 0111/d4- (2,35$) 0119/314 (1,01$),0125/i315 (0.5&0), C125/315 (0,52~3), 0127/38 (0,~7 4C: p)0123/d12 (0,5$), Of85/37 (0042,J)9 itid the l e a s t was 0114 /X90 (0. L7y) . 3, The various types of bacteria isolated were correlated to the ~e-~reritotrf di:a.rrbea, iilortality r a t e , age, clin i c a l feature, seasonal incidence and typ 01 feeding, a. The c l i n i c a l fe~tures: %i=e clirlical data ,5id noi; r e f l e c t a satisfactory e, Season: ~t was noticed t h a t shiqella species (lO@o),salmnella sgecies (81,8$), Proteu-s species (78,5$) and enteropatho:;enic E, coli (61.7%) infections were met with during hot season, while Xlehsiella (64.3$), a good deal of staghylococcal aureus (45*5$) and candida fs .Type of feeding: 3reast fed diarrheal cases had a s l i g h t l y lower iimrtality thm the a r t i f i c a l l y fed one. Staj$iylo co ccus aureus, c7andid.a and inost shigella were encountered in xtifically fed iilfai?ts. 4. The i n t e s t i n a l f l o r a i n diarrheal cases were tested for senstivity t o different aatibiotics and it was fotmd that senstivity could he airraged on a descending scale as nalidixic acid, kanamycin, neomycin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, su1phonami.de and the l e a s t was pencillin, 5, Suspensions representing the different 110” typs (10 serotypes) were used as an antigens to t e s t the serum of 25 infants from whose enteropzthogenic E, c o l i were isolated on t h e i r admission and 7 to 10 days l a t e r.
