Abstract

The present work was performed to investigate the effect and mechanism of action of crude toxin extracted from pink Nerium oleander’s leaves and the plan of the work was directed to investigate eight items using dogs of both sexes which were anaesthetized by Thiopentone sodium in a dose of l5mg/kg body weight and using isolated frogs hearts. It was noted that the intravenous injection of a lethal dose (250mg/kg B.W.) of crude toxin into intact anaesthetized dogs produced significant hypotension and inhibition of respiration and these effects started immediately after toxin injection and showed gradual progressive reduction till death of animal within period ranging between 7 to 9 min. The same effect was also produced when the same lethal dose was injected into anaesthetized dogs in which bilateral vagotomy and occlusion of both common carotid arteries were done and this indicated that the effect of the toxin on circulation and respiration is not reflexely produced via the baroreceptors of the vasosensory areas or the chemoreceptors of the carotid and aortic bodies.
