Abstract Invasive epidermoid carcinoma of the cervix is still the most common malignant tumour of the gynaecologic tract in most countries. Evidence exists supporting the association of early marriage, multiparity, low socioeconomic level and viral infection with a high incidence of cervical carcinoma. The pathology of human papilloma virus of the cervix attracted the attention of many authors partly because of its possible causal relationship with cervical neoplasia and partly because the presence of HPV in cervical epithelium gives rise to specific changes which may be confused with CIN or occurs in association with it. The aim of this work was to study the different cervical inflammatory lesions and cervical carcinoma, to estimate the accuracy of Pap smear in detection of cervical inflammatory lesions and cervical neoplasia and to find out the prevalence of HPV among cases of cervicitis, CIN, and cervic:il carcinoma. |
