Abstract Transesophageal echocariograph (TEE) is accepted as the method of choice for the diagnosis of a patent foramen ovale (PFO). however. However, direct anatomic confirmation by surgery or autopsy, regarding the presence or absence of a PFO on transesophageal imaging has been obtained in only a limited number of patients. The aim of the present work was to define the prevalence sate of left-to-right interatrlal shunt through patent foramen ovale in adult patients with rheumatic left- sided cardiac lesions with the aid of transesophageal echocardiography. For this purpose, 103 patients were studied from Tanta University Hospital and National Heart Institute, Imbaba, Cairo between July 1996 and May 1997. |
