The major o b j e c t i v e s of t h i s i~vestigatiofia r e to idectify s o c i e l and economic e f f e c t s of r u r a l household heads mi g r a t i o n and retu~nu pon t h e s t r u c t u r a l and funct i o n a l aspects of t h e rurzl family, Variables winLch a r e r e s p o n s i b l e f o r t h e v a r i a t i o n i n these e f f e c t s , and t h e r e l a t i v e importance of esch veriable. Based upon relevant t h e o r e t i c a l framework and L i t e r - a t u r e review two groLps OL ’ypotheses weye stated.Firstly, it was proposed t h a t emigration and r e t u r n of household heads v:ould r e s u l t i n changes in t h e s t r u c t u r a l and funct i o n a l aspects of t h e i r f a m i l i e s including type of family, s i z e of a g r i c u l t u r a l land t e n u r e , family standzrd of l i v i n g , family degree of traditionism, family s o l i d a r i t y , femily f u n c t i o n a l r o l e s , and a u t h o r i t y of making decisions in t h e family. Secondly , it was proposed t h a t s i z e of change i n t h e fzrnily aspects due t o migration and r e t u r n of t h e household heeds would be varied according t o a group of . independent vzriables which i n c l u d e d u r a t i o n of migration, length of r e t u r n period, t h e p l a c e i n which wife and children s t a y during husband’s migration, size of household % Sef ore migration, educational st atus of t h e household head b e f o r e m i g r a t i o n , degree of family tradit ionism before rnzgration, degree of family s e l f - s u f f i c i e n c y b e f o r e migra t i o n , and f i n a l l y , degree O f fzmlly f u n c t i o n a l r e l i a n c e before rnigrat ion.
