Abstract

The present i n v e s t i g a t i o n was carried out t o study the e f f e c t of Fusarium oxysporum, a soil-borne phytopathogenic fungus causing w i l t i n soybeans, on plant growth and symbiotic nitrogen f i x a t i o n i n d i f f e r e n t soybean Rhizobium j aponicum associations, The performanceof the d i f f e r e n t soybean- &. japonicum associations i n the presence of E, oxgsporum was a l s o evaluated i n order t o f i n d o u t those associations, which may be able t o t o l e r a t e c u l t i v a t i o n i n f i e l d s infected with the pathogen, To accomplish t h i s study, the symbiotic e f f i c i e n c y of 15 3 japonicum s t r a i n s (TI, TJ, E 45, TAL 110, 138, R.J.G.. 377, 3432, 110, 1577, E 41, R.J.D., 3407; Sob. 6, T13) originated from d i f f e - r e n t sources was evaluated i n pots using Clark soybeans, Plants were inoculated with standard inoculum of each rhizob; ial s t r a i n 7 days a f t e r germination, Number and dry weight of nodules formed on roots, and dry weight, and t o t a l N (%, mg/plant) of shoots were determined 50 and 90 days a f t e r germination. A t harvest (1X days a f t e r germination) yield of seeds was a l s o recorded. Resu l t s indicated t h a t &.ja~onicum s t r a i n s 1577, 138 and Sobo 6 were the most e f f i c i e n c y s t r a i n s and were s e l e c t e d , t h e r e f o r e , f o r the next experiments .
