Abstract

The host granulomatous response to S. mansoni eggs deposited in the portal venules of the liver has been shown to be an immunological reaction of the cell-mediated type.(3511 There is an evidence that both granuloma formation and its modulation represent a delicate balance between subpopulations of Tlymphocytes: the CD4’ cells are responsible for the formation of the granuloma while CD8 + cells are responsible for its modulation.(1041 In Schistosomal patients, although the prevalence of hepatitis B-surface antigen (HBs Ag) was reported to be high,(1291 the possible additional role of hepatitis C virus infection has been also postulated.(130) HCV is an RNA virus responsible for about 95% of cases of hepatitis infections in recipients of blood transfusion and 50% of cases of sporadic non A, non B hepatitis. It is a virus that has been cloned but never visulaized.
