Abstract

A i r flow resistance c h a r a c t e r i s t i c in grain beds was e s s e n t i a l f o r engineers to make the r i g h t approach and decision t o several engineering aspects such as new sys tem design, improvement and economic operat ing conditions of n a t u r a l and mechanical v e n t i l a t i n g systems f o r drying, aeration and cooling processes. Shce paddy r i c e and wheat are considered the major grab crops in Egypt, the experbents carried out to evaluate the pressure DROP of the grain storage system f o r sizing the required v e n t i l a t i o n fans and minimizing the energy losses. The principle. objectives of t h i s investigation were studying some of the physical propert i e s of paddy r i c e and wheat. General mathematics rel a t i o n s h i p s were determined to predict the pressure DROP of air passage through beds of paddy r i c e (IR 28) and wheat (Salrha 61) of Egyptian v a r i e t i e s over wide range of air flow r a t e , bulk density and moisture content. Cylindrical grain t e s t bin was constructed of 3 mm galvanized sheet metal w i t h 34 cm inside diameter and 65 high. It was connected to piping system which consis ted of a centriffagal fan, air velocity controllhg gate, an o r i f i c e p l a t e , air s t e e l pipes ad a i r f l e x i - ble tubing.
