Abstract This study was conducted to provide a comprehensive overview on the efficacy of water extract of the fruits of Ammi majus; an annual weed which grows wildly over the Nile Delta and belongs to the family Umbelhferae against both Biomphalaria snails and Schistosoma mansom larvae; the miracidia and the cercariae. The molluscicidal power of the plant extract against the snail’s developmental stages, namely, ova and newly hatched, young, mature and aged snails as well as the degree of interference of storage of both the powder and extract, extraction temperature and pH, extract exposure to UV radiation, and the powder particle size of the ground fruits, with the molluscicidal potency of the plant was evaluated- The effect of snail exposure to either low (25- l00 ppm) or high (200-400 ppm) concentrations of the plant extract on the snail biology, through monitoring their egg laying capacity was determined over one-month period. The impact of the snail exposure to the plant extract on the histological architecture of their hennaplirodite and the digestive glands was also investigated. In addition, the physiological capacity of the snails (adult and aged) to counteract either acute (350 ppm over 24hr) or chronic (100 ppm over 4 weeks) exposure to A majus extract was investigated by monitoring the activities of some enzymes involved . |
