Abstract
T h e s e s t u d i e s were c a r r i e d o u t t o i n v e s t i g a t e t h e e f f i c i e n c y of some m a t e r i a l s i n t h e p u r i f i c a t i o n o f raw s u g a r c a n e s o l u t i o n s and t o f i n d o u t t h e optimum c o n d i - t i o n s f o r t h e p u r i f i c a t i o n by u s i n g t h e s e materials. I n addi Lion, t h e s t o r a g a b i l i t y of t h e p u r i f i e d s u g a r s o l u - t i o n s a t 5’ and 25OC was a l s o s t u d i e d . Such s u g a r s o l - u t i o n s are u s e d f o r t h e p r o d u c t i o n of r e f i n e d s u g a r o r may be u s e d d i r e c t l y i n some f o o d i n d u s t r i e s . The s t u d - i e s r e v e a l e d t h e f o l l o w i n g s : 1. Magnesium o x i d e , c a l c i u m o x i d e , c a l c i u m c a r b o n a t e , sodium s u l p h i t e , a l u m i n i u m o x i d e , ” T o n s i l ” c l a y s and c a l c i u m p h o s p h a t e d i b a s i c i n a d d i t i o n t o a c t i v a t e d . c h a r c o a l were t e s t e d as p u r i f i e r s f o r raw s u g s r s o l - u t i o n s . Magensium o x i d e and ”Tonsil” c l a y s g a v e t h e b e s t r e s u l t s as p u r i f i e r s i n a d d i t i o n t o Aluminium o x i d e . 2. H e a t i n g of t h e s e m a t e r i a l s a t 300 ”C f o r o n e h o u r r e s u l t e d i n i n c r e a s i n g t h e e f f i c i e n c y o f MgO, CaO , CaC03, Ca2HP04 and a c t i v a t e d c h a r c o a l f o r t h e remov a l of c o l o u r i n g matters; b u t t h e e f f i c i e n c y of Na2S03, A1203 and ” T o n s i l ” c l a y s was d e c r e a s e d . 3. The t e s t e d p u r i f i e r s d i f f e r e d i n t h e i r a b i l i t y t o r e - move t h e c o l o u r i n g g r o u p s ( a l k a l i n e d e g r a d a t i o n p r o - d u c t s of r e d u c i n g s u g a r s , m e l a n o i d i n s and c a r a m e l s ) .
