Abstract

An epileptic seizure is a brief and usually unprovoked stereotyped disturbance of behaviour, emotion, motor function, or sensation which on clinical evidence results from cortical neuronal discharge. Epilepsy can only be diagnosed when seizures have recurred in an apparently spontaneous fashion. Rarely, individuals with epilepsy may have seizures provoked by reflex stimuli e.g. visual stimuli (Chadwick, 1990).Epilepsy is unquestionably the commonest neurological disorder (Goodridge and Shorvon, 1983). Estimates based on epidemiologic studies indicate thatjip to 1% in the United States have epilepsy and that new cases appear at an annual rate ot about 40 perlOO,000 (Eli et al, 1989).The overall prognosis for patients developing epilepsy is good, with up to KWc achieving long-term remissions (Annergers et al, 1979), a significant number of people with epilepsy have a chronic interactable disorder causing major disability with significant socio-economic complications (Chadwick and Rynolds, 1990).
