Abstract Dilated cardiomyopathy is a syndrome of congestive heart failure characterized by marked dilatation of both ventricles with severe impairment of systolic function and a high end diastolic pressure. It is a worldwide disease occuring in all ages and races with poor prognosis, The cause of dilated cardiomyopathy is still unclear, chronic excessive ingestion of alcohol, pregnancy, systemic hypertension and a variety of infections appear to lower the threshold for development of DCM. Immunological factors and cigarette smoking has been found to playa role in the aetiology of DCM. Echocardiography in dilated cardiomyopathy shows dilated cardiac chambers mainly the left ventricle, reduced ejection fraction, reduced fractional shortening and global hypokinesia. The echocardiographic assessment of the right ventricle is somewhat difficult, the right ventricular dimensions can be obtained from the Mmode or two-dimensional echocardiography the right ventricular global systolic function can be assessed by calculation of the ejection fraction of the right ventricle or from the tricusped annulus excursion. The diastolic function assessment by echocardiography is obtained through isovolumic relaxation time, the pattern of mitral flow and the pattern of pulmonary flow. |
