Abstract A dental epidemiological survey was conducted on 600 subjects attending the outpatient clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry , Tanta University . Their ages ranged between 5 and 40 years. All examinations were conducted by one examiner. Chronic gingivitis and adult periodontitis were assessed using the method described by Davies and Horawitz (1974). Juvenile periodontitis was assessed using criteria described• by Baer (1971). Prepubertal periodontitis and rapidly progressive periodontitis were assessed using criteria described by Page and Schroeder (1982). The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and distribution of gingival and periodontal diseases In children and adults attending the outpatient clinic of Faculty of Dentistry, Tanta University. from a total of 600 subjects examined the results of this study showed that :1- The prevalence of chronic gingivitis was found to be as high as 89.5%. 2 . The prevalence and severity of chronic gingivitis increased with age. 3 Plaque and calculus scores were also found to increase with age. 4 Chronic periodontitis was not detected in children underthe age of 15 years ; after that age the prevalence’ and severity of chronic periodontitis increased. 5 There were no statistically significant difference between males and females in the’ prevalence of chronic gingivitis and periodontitis although males had higher plaque scores and calculus than females. |
