Abstract The fetal membranes consist of an inner thin, glistening tough layer called the amnion, and an outer thicker but more friable layer called the chorion. The amnion is a thin, translucent, avascular, double-layered menifrrane which lies in direct contact with the inner surface of the chorion but never fuses with it.Through the amnion three umbilical vessels can be seen imbedded in Wharton’s jelly, these are two umbilical arteries and one umbilical vein. The amnion is loosely attached to the Wharton’s jelly except at the site of insertion of(1) the umbilical cord in the placenta where they are firmly attached. |
