Abstract

The results of preliminary bvestigations show that several members of the various Ac tLnomyce tes groups have the capac9ty to utilize keratin as the sole nitrogen source. The abil5ty of the organism to utilize keratin was denoted by tracing one or more of the hydrolysis products of proteins, i,e. pept3.de, amino acid or ammonia ni trogen, - Of those organisms capable of attackhg keratb we chose five f sola tes, takZng 5.n to consideration, apart from the hSgh potency, the interference of the plgmenta, produced 5.n the media, with the analytical procedures, Apart from Stre to- ces atib3.o thus, the- other orgatlf sms were S trep-f ac%ens, S tre to ces bo t tropensis ~treptorq~cerism osus and sT +%r - e to ces long~sporus-davus. - The results of thin preliminary investigation usiog small volume medium and comparatively large keratin content , show that the hydrolysis products of keratu dZffered with organism, nature of the keratin and / or experimental durat9on. Ammonia n5trogen was the least products, for most of the keratin sources and / or organisms, ViitbSa the first two weeks, -S-tr-eY to- --c-egs _logn pis orus-flavus produced the largest amoun of amino aci s romtesfed kerat ins followed by Strepto~ycesr bosus on human hai r , sheep wool o r chick feather. ~eptmmaticnwa smaxlmuxn by Stre tom ces bottro ensis cultured on buffalo or camel ha i r o ces albofaciens on cow, goat ha* or sheep. woo toxqyces rfLmosus on sheep-wool or cMck feather, - The preliminary inve s tigation revealed that S tre~towces rimosus was the only orgauSsm capable of producing anti- Gram negative and anti-Gram posltive bactericides, on almost a l l media,
