Abstract The first chapter of the thesis is an introduction about the electrochemical nature and kinetics of corrosion. Corrosion inhibitors were defined and systematically classified. Experimental observation of corrosion inhibition and the effect of inhibitors on polarization behaviour was clarified. A literature survey on corrosion inhibition of aluminium and zinc metals in acidic and alkaline media has been made. Chapter I1 deals with experimental chemical (weight-loss and thermometric) and electrochemical (potentiodynamic) techniques used for measuring the corrosion rate and various electrochemical corrosion parameters of both aluminium and zinc metals in 2 M hydrochloric acid and in 2 M sodium hydroxide solutions in absence and in presence of tested inhibitors. The investigated compounds employed in this study as corrosion inhibitors for aluminium and zinc metals are two categories : (i) Mono-azo substituted compounds : p-anisidine (I), p-toluidine (11), o-toluidine (111), a-naphthylamine (IV) and P-naphthylamine (V) (ii) Bis-azo substituted compounds : p-anisidine(VI), o-toluidine(VII), m-toluidine(VIII), a-naphthylamine (IX) and P-naphthylamine (X) In ,the experimental part a complete description of apparatus, working procedure and preparation of solutions was given. Electrodes preparation, electrolytic cell and polarization measurements. |
