Abstract Cadmium is commonly regarded as a pollutant of world wide concern. It is often considered as the metal of the 20.tb. century. It has a prolbnged cumulative effect, thus chronic cadmium toxicity is inevitable from food, water and ’air pollution. Renal, pulmonary, skeletal and cardiovascular diseases are closely correlated to chronic cadmium toxicity. Follow up studies of persons with renal tubular dysfunction due to chronic cadmium toxicity have shown that the proteinuria is irreversible and slowly progressive but it remains to be clarified whether reduction of cadmium exposure has any preventive effects on the occurance of morphological and functional renal changes. Thus, the aim of the present work was to study the histological and ultrastructural changes that might occur in the kidney of albino rats after chronic cadmium injection, and to detect whether these morphological renal changes are reversible or irreversible after cadmium withdrawal. |
