Abstract

The genetic material used in the present study included two groups of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill), genotypes: four heat-tolerant lines, and five heat-sensitive cultivars. Then nine parents, 20 Fls, 20 F2s and 3 commercial hybrids were evaluated in Disuq district, Kafr El-Sheikh, Governorate during the late summer season (under high temperature condition) of 1993. The obtained results could be summarized as follows: (1) Heterosis over the mid-parents point was highly significant for early and total yield, (2) heterosis over the better parent was significant in early and total fruit weight, (3) in all studied characters the best hybrids outyielded the check hybrids, (4) inbreeding depression was highly significant for total yield, (5) lines CL5915-223-D,-2-1 and CL5915-206D,-2-5 and cv. Peto 86 were good combiners for fruit set percent and early and total yield (6) fruit set percent was significantly negatively correlated with average fruit weight and fruit firmness, (7) average fruit weight was significantly negatively correlated with fruit set percent and early and total yield as a number and weight of fruits, (8) heritability estimates in broad sense was high for fruit set percent and early and total yield as a number and weight of fruits and (9) heritability estimates in narrow sense was high for number of fruits in early and total yield.
