Abstract The objectives of the present investigation were: (a) t o compare the relative efficiency fof three methods of selection, i,e,, modified mass selection, modified earto- row selection and the S1-line selection; (b) to study the effect of plant density on the efficiency of selection i n ~rdert o ident i fy the optimum pl ant density f o r selectio2 and (c) to study the effect of selection on the type and rnagnituJe of ccnetic variance, !The newly intro:duced variety, itsynthetic La Posta ” was selected as a base po-pulation of t h i s study, The investigation was carrie6 out a t the Sakha Agricultural Eqerirnent Stat ion, Ministry of Agriculture during Yne @.owing seasons of I974 to 1977, The f i r s t part of -this iiivestigat ion deals with selection experiments, The three selection experiments; the modified mass selection, the modified ear-to-row and S1-line selection were perf orcleil independently at each of two plant densities, the low density of 36 000 plants/ha and the high density of 72 000 plants/ha, selection was practiced for yield of grain only, Three cycles of mass selections each a t the two plant densities were completed during the main srowing seasons of 1974 to I976 producing six im9roved cycles. |
