Abstract

Reperfusion after myocardial infarction is associated with improved survival and preservation of cardiac function . However the reperfusion of is chaemic tissue may release oxygen free radicals which may have an adverse effect on left ventricular function. Substantial clinical and experimental evidence has been obtained in recent years to support the involvement of neutrophils in the development of myocardial injury particularly during ischemia followed by reperfusion The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of reperfusion on the free radical scavenger related indices which reflect the free radical production after successful angioplasty. from May 1997 to May 1998 , 27 patients who underwent PTCA were studied . Twenty four of the twenty seven studied patients were males and three were females . The mean age of the patients was 53.3 ±4.1 year. The study population included 13 patients with a totally occluded right coronary artery, 8 patients with a totally occluded left anterior descending coronary artery and 6 patients with a totally occluded circumflex coronary artery.
