Abstract

A substantial work has been done on the prostati-c gland, p a r t i c u l a r l y on the surgical approaches for the purpose of p r o s t a t i c adenectomy i n view of achieving the most appropriate outcorne. However, very l i t t l e worke wasdone as f a r as the p r o s t a t i c cavity is concerned. Amongst these authers are, Crabtree and Brondy (1930) who investigated the relationship between the type of p r o s t a t i c growth and the radiol.ogica1 appearances of the p r o s t a t i c cavity a f t e r surgery. Also, Marco Caine (1953) who investigated the relationship between the prostatic cavity and tiis surgical procedures applied. It has been the a i m of the present investigation t o throw some l i g h t on the nature of the p r o s t a t i c cavicy i n r e l a t i o n t o t h e d i f f e r e n t surgical operations, plus, a c o r r e l a t i v e study between the cavity and persistance or r e l e i f of preoperative symptoms. For achieving the purpose of t h i s study, 180 patients with s e n i l e p r o s t a t i c enlargement have been operated upon using three d i f f e r e n t approaches (Freyer’ s, Millem ’ s and T,U.R). In each case a preoperative radiological examination was carried out i n order t o evaluate the type of prost a t i c growth as w e l l as pathological findings in the urinary t r a c t , if any. In the course of postoperative care, another rad- - iological examination has been conducted to assess the prostatic cavity. I n t h i s examination an ascending as well as a micturating cystogram w e r e done. In addition, each prostatic adenoma removed was subjected t o a histopathological study t o identify it’s nature i.e adenomatous, mixed or fibro-muscular.
