Abstract Despite extensive research, preeclampsia remains enigmatic and a major cause of both perinatal and maternal morbidity and(1.2) mortality. The etiology of preeclampsia has remained elusive for centuries and no breakthrough has yet been achieved in the understanding of its pathophysiology or in the development of a(3-5) specific treatment or means of prevention.Like many other enigmatic diseases, preeclampsia has attracted over the centuries a series of treatment schemes many of which have proved far more dangerous that the disease itself(1.6) (for example, trephination and renal decapsulation). Our limited knowledge of pathophysiology and etiology is indicated by current therapy, which remains empiric early delivery with attendant risks of operative delivery and iatrogenic(2) prematurity. |
