Abstract
Diabetes mellitus and liver disease are associated in various ways: Liver disease itself may be diabetogenic condition. Liver disease is associated with therapy for diabetes mellitus’ a) and diabetes may be a cause of liver disease.Insulin activates both glucose transport into cell and its metabolic conversion to glycogen and The liver is the major site of insulin clearance following its secretion by pancreatic B-cells into portal circulation.However, Cirrhosis is characterized by a number of abnormalities in circulating substrate and hormone concentrations including glucagon, growth hormone, norepinephr ine and insulin itself. Moreover, an increase in each of these substrates has been shown to be associated with development of insulin resistance.Hyperinsulinaemia and impaired glucose tolerance are frequent features of liver cirrhosis suggesting insulin resistance and 10%-40% of the patients are frank diabetic.
