Abstract

This investigation was carried out to estimate the genetic variance components within each of the two open pollinated varieties of maize, i.e. American Early and Shedwon-3 under two population densities and two levels of nitrogen. The objective of this study was to search the optimum environment to improve these varieties during selection programmer. The field work dealing with this study was conducted during the three ’growing seasons 1974, 1975 and 1976 at Gemmeiza Agricultural research Station Farm, Ministry of Agriculture. In 1974, 100 rows from both American Early and Shedwan-3 varieties were grown to produce the material seeds of Design I mating as outlined by Comstock and Robinson (1948). One randomly chosen plant from each row was used as a male pollen parent and was crossed to four random plants used as females. There fore, the total number of full-sibs were 400 families. Each ear represented a full-sib family, while the ears having a common parent represented a half-sib family.
