Abstract

Agriculture sector is considered one of the most important sector ln Egyptlan economy. Agricultural mechanization 1s regarded as the corner stone of agricultural development, that raises the efficiency of used economic resources-in the light of high wage levels, greater streams of emigration, and lobar shortage-by increasing input productivity, and decreasing production costs. This study aimed to identifying the economic impact of farm machinery use-with different degrees-on farm production and the cost unit of output as well as identifying the main social determinants of such use. The present study conducted in four villages from two districts at Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate. These are: El-Taifa and El-Kafr El-Gedded villages from Kafr El-Sheikh district; El-Ghonimi and Bakatoush villages from Qellen district. A sample of 10% of farmers was drawn randomly on a stratified basis according to landholding size in each village. The total sample size reached 160 farmers. These farmers were classified into two groups according to their intensity of mechanization use. That is fully mechanized farms, and partially mechanized farms. An interview schedule form was developed to inc 1 ude different variables pertained to the objectives of the study was pretested and modified accordingly. Personal interview; it was the mean of collecting the data. Simple and multiple regression analyses as well as step-wise multiple regression analysis were the statistical tools for analyzing the data. As for the social determinant, the statistical analysis indicated that, farmer’s educational status. adopting new farm practices. contact with agricultural extension personal, family size, and availability of family lobar were the significant determinants of the degree of agricultural mechanization for the total sample. Cost function analysis produces significant evidences that high levels of farm machinery use have direct impacts on production costs, and net farm income.
