Abstract When comparing the organization and biology of cephalopods with other invertebrates or especially developed species of other mollusc groups, we keep arriving at the conclusion that the representatives of this group has attained a particularly high level of organization. Thus, it seems justified to accord them a particular status among other molluscs and invertebrates . On the other hand, a comparison of cephalopods with vertebrates suggests itself with respect to their cerebralization , the efficiency of the sense organs and their high metabolic rate lead to the fact that there are manifold parallels with and convergences towards this group. Cephalopods constitute a significant part of the Egyptian fauna today. They are of major interest to man and most species are of economic importance. Cephalopods are considered among the valuable food items and are consumed mainly by inhibitants of cities located on marine coasts . In spite of the.economic importarrce of this group as a promosing non traditional protein supply as well as its greatest importance from the evolutionary point of view, there is no detailed information about it . In Egypt , the history of research on cephalopods is poor and only five attempts were carried in this concern, most of them are taxonomic; Therefore, it was necessary to carry out the present work in attempt to invade this problem for the first time in Egypt with a hope that such study can do justice to the complexity and advancement. |
