Abstract
Modem insectivores are mostly small, nocturnal animals,
maintaining, possibly because of some special habitat, the earliest
mammalian features. They have persisted with little change since the
Cretaceous. Apart from the retention of primitive characters, they have
little else in common. With them have been classified a number of early,
primitive eutherians that cannot be placed in any other order. The order
Insectivora is this a convenience rather than a natural group.
