Abstract Cholelithiasis which is the presence of gallbladder stones, is a major health problem of increasing incidence nowadays. Recently, a great deal of effort has been paid to define the pathophysiological basis of gallstone formation.Gallbladder might act as a reservoir allowing growth of stones under certain circumstances; some of which are related to the gallbladder itself as changes in motor and other gallbladder functions. Some authors may also incriminate the production of the bile in which cholesterol cannot be maintained in solution as in cases of cholesterol/bile acid pool imbalance.Despite the fact that several conditions are usually considered to be associated with gallstones. Only a few studies have carefully examined the validity of these associations. One of the most controversial associations with gallstone formation is liver cirrhosis. |
