Essent-ial o i l s produced i n Egypt are quite a c c e p t a b l e i n f o r e i g n markets and s e r v e as a good s o u r c e of the n a t i o n a l income. T h e r e is an i n c r e a s e i n t h e cultivated area with aromatic and m e d i c i n a l p l a n t s t o f a c e t h e c o n t i n u o u s 1 y i n c r e a s i n g demand F f o r s u c h p r o d u c t s i n t h e l a s t ten year-s ( Shams El-Deen,iY77 ). Volatile o i l s p l a y an i m p o r t a n t role in t h e medical p u r p o s e s ? food a s p e c t s as w e l l as i n coc,metics. A s f o r m e d i c i n e , \ t h e y may b e u s e d as local s t i m u l a n t s , c a r m i n a t i v e s , d i u r e t i c s ? mild a n t i s e p t i c s , local i r r i t a n t s ? a n t i h e l m i n t i c s or parasticides. I n f o o d s , t h e y may s e r v e as s p i c e s and as a f 1 avoring a g e n t s , s p e c i a1 1 y i n canf ecti o n s and b e v e r a g e s . T h e p r e s e n c e o f a n t i s e p t i c o i l s i n s p i c e s may p-r. e v e n t e x c e s s i v e growth of b a c t e r i a . I n a d d i t i o n , t h e o i l s are mostly used i n p e r f u m e s and cosmetics .
