Abstract Platelets are non nucleated, discoid or ellip.tical in shape, On averge 3 u in Length and 0.5 to I U in thickness. On electron microscopy the platelet was found to be an extremely complex system of membranes, microfilament, micro tubules and organella and can be divided into three zones namely :1 — Peripheral zone.2 — The — 301 — gel zone.3 — The organelle zone. The platelets arise in the cytoplasm of megaka— ryocytea which are mainly found in the bone marrow. Blood platelets play two distinct roles in cessa• tion of bleeding, the baemostatic function and the thromboplastio ftanction. The first is accomplished by occlusion of opening in blood vessels by masses of p1— atelets. Whereas the thromboplastic function is sac — amplished by the participation of chemical constituents of platelets in the blood coagulation mechanism. |
