Farm cooperatives are one of the comeratones of a g r i c u l t u r a l development. They are the organizational framework f o r managing and executing e g r i c u l t u r a l programs at the l o c a l l e v e l . The l a w of egricultural cooperation s p e c i f i e s the major structural and operational aspects of farm cooperatives. Besides, the law outilines the major goals and objectives to be sought by the cooperali% es. It is not known, however, which s t r u c t u r a l and f u n c t i o n a l p r o p e r t i e s of cooperatives f a c i l i t a t e the achievement of goal. All what can be s t a t e d safely is that farm cooperatives do vary in their performance, Some are more e f f e c t i v e than others, still, we need know what makes f o r t h i s v a r i a t i o n Ln effectiveness. Hence, t h i s study a i m s at identifying te f a c t o r s thay a f f e c t farm cooperatives effectiveness, A review of relevant l i t e r a t u r e dealing with crganizational effectiveness i n general and cooperative effectivemess in P a r t i c u l a r shows tha-t three major approaches crar being u t i l i z e d as conceptual frameworks. These, a r e , the goal approach , system resource approach, and the systemic approach, The systemic approach is used as the conceptua.1 framework i n t h i s s-hdy because of its generality and inclasiveness.
