Abstract

Occupational skin diseases were found to be of the most common occupational diseases. They were found to represent almost one third of occupational diseases in those countries. They can be caused by a variety of agents which can be chemical, physical, mechanical, biological and psychological. Occupational exposure to chemical agents can cause occupational contact dermatitis, which represent more than 90% of occupational skin diseases. Occupational Skin diseases can be also caused by physical agents such as; exposure to heat, cold, low humidity, radiation and vibration. Ionizing radiation can lead to adverse dermatological effects. Also ultraviolet radiation can cause short term effects and long term effects. Also exposure to mechanical agents can lead to development of callosities, blisters, laceration and frictional contact dermatitis. Occupational exposures to biological agents as, bacteria, fungi, viruses or parasites may cause occupational skin infections. The role of stress in Occupational skin diseases cannot be ignored and it can be causing or aggravating factor. Other occupational skin diseases which have mixed etiology include: occupational contact urticarial, occupational acne, chloracne, occupational pigmentation disturbances and ccupational skin cancer Finally and after listing these different types of occupational skin diseases, their complications and impact on workers’ lives, the establishment of an effective occupational skin diseases prevention program is very essential.
