Abstract
Acute organophosphorus (OP) poisoning is a major clinical problem in the developing world. The toxicological effects of the OP compounds are almost entirely due to the inhibition of both acetylcholinesterase and pseudo-cholinesterase activities in the nervous system, resulting in respiratory, myocardial and neuromuscular transmission impairment. The clinical course of OP poisoning may be quite severe and may need intensive care management, because respiratory failure is the major reason for mortality. So, careful monitoring, appropriate management and early recognition of this complication may decrease the mortality rate among these patients. Aim to develop nursing standards for management of OP poisoned patients at Mansoura Emergency Hospital. Methods Descriptive design was used to accomplish this study. Based on the findings standards were developed. Thirty two expert examined the validity of the tools. Forty staff nurses also were included. They were observed for their performance during providing care for OP poisoned patients over the three shifts. Results Only 13% of the target nursing care procedures for OP poisoned patients were competently performed by the nurses, and the rest were incompetently performed. Conclusion The proposed standards are valid to be used at poisoning unit in Mansoura Emergency Hospital. Also, there was incompetent level of nursing performance of target procedures that are needed for caring of OP poisoned patients as observed among nurses in the poisoning unit
