Abstract

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of behavior disinhibition in the previous childhood psychiatric disorders. To evaluate the different presentations of behavior disinhibition in those childhood psychiatric disorders. To assess executive functions (shifting, inhibition and updating) in children with behavior disinhibition. To investigate whether behavior disinhibition has a relation with executive functions impairment. Methods: The study was conducted at the out-patient clinic (OPC) of Psychiatry Department, Mansoura University Hospitals (MUH). The study took place during the period from March 2009 to August 2010. This study is a case control study in which 137 children (cases N = 92, control N = 45) were fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria during the period of the study. All children (cases and control) were subjected to the following; after the consent of their parents: Clinical assessment; Psychometric assessment; Results: The primary differences implicate deficits in shifting to be specific to bipolar disorder, and deficits in working memory to be specific to ADHD.While the results indicate the deficit in inhibition to be present to some degree in both ADHD and bipolar disorders. There is emerging evidence for deficits in inhibition to be specific to ADHD combined, and deficits in working memory to be specific to ADHD inattentive type. While evidences indicate that deficits in shifting not specific to ADHD. It is difficult to distinguish deficits in executive functions to be specific to DBD.Impairment of EF in children with DBD may be due to the presence of comorbid ADHD. Age has positive significant correlation with updating only in cases while has positive significant correlation with the three EF in control. IQ level has positive significant correlation with EF in the studied groups. Conclusions: This new concept not only offers new targets for intervention and treatment, but also works to alleviate some portion of the stigma historically attached to syndromes associated with disinhibited behavior.
