Abstract

Interferon is a protein of family cytokines used in treatment of chronic HCV infection. IFN has metabolic and endocrinal side effects including thyroid disorders, type II DM. In addition; IFN can lead to adrenal dysfunction, panhypopituitarism, and sexual dysfunction in males. While GH secretion improved during IFN therapy. Furthermore IFN can increase serum triglycerides and affect bone metabolism by suppressing bone resorption. These metabolic and endocrinal effects of IFN may be a leading cause for reducing IFN dose or even stopping it according to degree of side effects and response of therapy to patients.
