Abstract Stem cells are defined as colonogenic, self-renewing progenitor cells that can generate one or more specialized cell types capable of differentiation into several different cells. Stem cells can be classified into two major categories: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Stem cells can also be classified as totipotent, pluripotent and multipotent. Stem cells can be used in differrent areas of obstetrics and gynecology: *Understanding the role of stem cells in the pathophysiology of endometriosis and endometrial cancer will help in their treatment. *Rapid advances in the maintenance and proliferation of various germ line stem cells will provide new opportunities to treat cases of primary infertility due to ovarian causes. *Fetal stem cells cross into maternal blood during pregnancy represent a potential non-invasive source of fetal genetic material for prenatal diagnosis. *Autologous stem-cell transplantation can be used to increase the percentage of treated ovarian malignancy. *Some diseases, such as haemoglobinopathies, immunological defects or inborn errors of metabolism can be treated by transplantation of stem cells. *Stem cell research has raised many ethical questions. The field is advancing but several difficult hurdles in the science need to be overcomed . |
