Abstract

• The present study was designed to evaluate the role of L-arginine on cyclosporine A induced gingival hyperplasia. Histological study showed that, there was increase in the thickness of epithelium in CsA treated groups in comparison with the control ones while, after the combined use of L-Arg together with CsA, the epithelial showed no increase in thickness when compared with control group. Immunohistochemical study of inducbule nitric oxide (iNOS), the control vehicle group revealed a positive immune reaction for iNOS .Both group AI and AII showed negative immunoreactivity for iNOS. While, group (B) and group BII showed positive immunoreactions for iNOS. As regard to Transmission Electron Microscopic showed, in the control vehicle group, normal ultrastructure of both basal and spinous cell layers. Study Group (AI) the basal cells clearly appeared with nuclei showed pyknosis. The cells showed intercellular and intracellular small vacuoles. There was destruction in the desmosomal junctions. Also, there was discontinuity in the basal lamia. The spinous cells showed increase in the cytoplasmic tonofibrils and appeared intercellular and intracellular vacuoles. The cells were connected by thick desmosomal junctions.. Study Group (AII) showed similar result to that of group AI with increase in severity. On the other hand, Study Group (BI), showed no or minimal ultrastructure features in comparison with group AI. Furthermore, Study Group (BII) showed better results than group (BI) and in a close resemble to the control group
