Abstract

The present study has been conducted upon hairdressers in Mansoura City aiming to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for viral hepatitis B and C, determination of incorrect knowledge and faulty practices that may enhance transmission of hepatitis B and C viral infections and overview the most common musculoskeletal disorders among hairdressers. The study comprised 179 hairdressers; 159 males and 20 females working in 78 hairdressers’ salons. They included hairdressers. Sixty individuals, administrators from Mogamaa El-Mahakem Establishment were used as controls. They matched the study group in socio-demographic variables of age, sex, duration of employment and smoking habit. Hairdressers in Mansoura City were subjected to questionnaire fulfilling the requirements of the study including socio-demographic data; occupational history; their know¬ledge and practice about hepatitis infection; musculoskeletal symptoms and work-related risk factors. A blood sample (5 ml) was taken from each subject for diagnosis of viral hepatitis markers (HBsAg and anti-HCV antibodies).Study population with symptoms of pain and discomfort during the past year were subjected to clinical examination for diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders, investigations including nerve conduction velocity studies, X-ray and CT were also carried out.
