Abstract The Bardawil lagoon is shallow, situated at the northern part of Sinai peninsula, and occupies an area of about 600 sq. km, about 80 km long, about 20 km maximum width and maximum depth about 2.5 meters. It is connected with the Mediterranean Sea by two narrow artificial inlets for water exchange, cutting through long convex sand barriers separating the lagoon from the sea. A part from the lagoon water body, the area is covered by recent sabkhas, salt pans and marshes, sand sheets and sand dunes, hiding domal formations common in north Sinai and belonging to the Mesozoic - Tertiary Syrian are movement. |
