Abstract

Because of the decreasing productivity of gilthead sea bream (S. aurata) from the natural (wild) water bodies, intensive aquaculture of gilthead bream is widespread in the Mediterranean area including Egypt. The present study is an attempt on the same way of pisciculture intensification of bream. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utilization of two different wet (sea) feeds with a dry aqua feed with juveniles of gilthead sea bream. The study was carried out during 1999 under similar outdoor (on farm) ambient conditions, but using one cubic meter net-cages with wooden frames suspended in a canal of the Governmental Fish Farm at Damietta (Al-Mousallas). Each cage was stocked by 30 fingerlings, after one week adaptation period on brackish water. Three groups, each of three cages (replicates), were allotted to receive gradually the experimental diets, which consisted of small shrimp (A) ”delp” (Palaemon spp.), trash (small) fish ”ton” or ”btahesh” (Aphanius fasciatus) (B) (both small shrimp and small fish were caught freshly from lake Manzalah), or pelleted (formulated) (C) diet (54.16% crude protein and 3288 Kcal GE/Kg, as a control). All diets were daily offered at a fixed feeding rate of 6% of the wet body weight of fish over a 6-day working week. The feeding experiment lasted for twelve week.
