Dissertation Abstract:
The study examines the current issue of masculine culture in the Egyptian society, a traditional culture that gave men the ownership of all matters in the community. It is also the dominant and most influential culture in the formation of all the social issues. It reflects the control of man and constitutes a general trend that affects many aspects of the community, for example, work either at home or outside the home, the social upbringing, the status in society, reproduction, violence, inheritance and political participation. Masculine culture then becomes clear and visible in all spheres of social life in the Egyptian society, which, like other traditional societies, is a patriarchal society dominated by male culture and imposes its trusteeship on various systems.
The Most Important Results
The study found a number of results; the most important are the following:
- That there are areas still exclusively for men, such as in the agricultural and industrial fields. Even in the event of the entry of women in these areas, her role is confined to the aspects that do not require high skills.
- The economic conditions play an important role by the dominant father in the education of girls; as in a tight situation, the father prefers educating male children or giving the better opportunities of education to males and the lesser to females, particularly in the villages, believing that the future of the girl lies in her marriage and care of the family.
- The findings of the study suggest that the case studies consider some political positions, such as the mayor ”reserved for men” and they distinguish between these positions and the other positions ”reserved for women.” In the urban societies, we see change and evolution in thinking and in family relationships more than the case in the countryside..
- Despite the refusal of many of the interviewed women, especially rural women to women’s access to some political office positions such as mayors ( a fact that shows that women place themselves in the frame of masculine culture and that they refuse to remove themselves from that profile), this has not prevented women from occupying many of the prominent political positions.
- The pattern of socialization and its impact on the distribution of family roles still governs the relationship quality within the family, and reflects much of the distinction between male and females such as discrimination in the attention and even the method of punishment between them. With the passage of time, distinction becomes clear also in the selection process of the marriage partners, especially for girls. All these qualitative distinctions are understood by both males and females and is transmitted from generation to generation so that they become part of the mechanisms and support for the continuation of the patriarchal culture.
