Abstract

Pure films of PMMA and PMMA doped with different levels of azo dye have been prepared using a casting technique. The influence of doping levels and UV irradiation with different irradiation time on the optical and electrical properties has been studied. The absorption spectral analysis showed that the doped films have two absorption bands attributed to π – π* and n – π* transitions of choromophore groups. These bands disappear upon UV irradiation. It was found also that energy gap Eg decreases with increasing doping levels whereas it increase with increasing irradiation time. Dielectric analysis was performed on pristine and UV irradiation. Films of pure PMMA and PMMA doped with different contents of azo dye. The temperature and frequency dependence of dielectric permittivity (’ε), dissipation factor (tan δ) and Ac conductivity (σAc) were studied in the frequency range 100 Hz – 100 KHz and temperature range 30 – 150 oC. the results shows that the correlated barrier hopping mechanism (CBH) is the most suitable mechanism to describe the Ac conduction behavior in the present system.
