Abstract

The comparative Ultrastructural study of the spermiogenesis of Egretta alba , Cairina moschata, Coturnix coturnix, Gallus gallus, Meleagris gallopavo and Columba livia were accounted. Spermiogenesis and mature spermatozoa were described, including acrosome, perforatorium, nuclear changes and flagellum. The six species were studied follow the generally accepted scheme bird sperm cell differentiation in many characters. The acrosomal vesicle develops from Golgi bodies as large vacuole in Egretta alba, Coturnix coturnix, Gallus gallus, and Meleagris gallopavo. However, in Cairina moschata and Columba livia the above structure develops as large electron dense¬granule.During the spermatid differentiation of the present material, the nucleus elongates. The perinuclear manchette microtubule plays a direct role in shaping and elongation of the nucleus. The chromatin material of the spermatids undergoes a gradual condensation showing a homogenous increase in electron density in Cairina moschata, Coturnix coturnix, Gallus gallus and Columba livia. However, in Egretta alba and Meleagris gallopavo the chromatin material in mature spermatozoa appears as spherical masses. Many features of the six species sperm tail are common to that of other birds.
