Abstract The studied soils cover the northern part of the Nile Delta including both Dakahlia and Kafr El - Sheikh governorates. Sixty samples were collected representing thirty soil profiles, ninteen from Dakahlia and eleven from Kafr El - Sheikh. These soil samples have been treated mechanically, chemically and mineralogically to discuss their impact on fertility variation. 1- Mechanical analysis and soil texture : Mechanical analysis proved that soils of the studied area composed mainly of fine sediments, silt and clay, were transported by the river Nile distributaries to the Delta flood plain. soils tend to be finer northwards, especially south Burullus and Manzala Lakes due to the gradual loss in the water current velocity combined with the effect of lagoons which act as barrier due to their higher water densities. Soils of coarse sediments recorded in the coastal plain are deposited under mixed marine conditions. |
