Abstract
By using double - stained for cartilage and bone with Alcian-blue and Alizarin red-s and also histological studies, the skeletal characters of the appendicular skeleton of these scincid lizards Scincus scincus, Mabuya quinquetaeniata, Chalcides sepoides and Eumeces Schneideri at different lengths are less variable, they are of much greater value in establishing rejlationships than external characters. The numerous ossification centers which are already present in the juvenile forms have been identified. Altogether, the variation found in timing of appearance of the ossifying centres in scincid lizards was not great. There is a slight indication of great variation in later developmental stages.
