Abstract

The main eight Egyptian cotton varieties were included in a diallel crossing system to study the combining ability in Egyptian cotton. Twenty eight crosses were made in 1970 and 1971. The parents, the 1971 F1 hybrids, the 1972 F1 and F2 hybrids were studied for both , general and specific combining ability effects during three seasons.
Statistical analysis followed those Suggested by Griffing (1956). Both agronomic and fiber properties were studied.
Results may be summarized briefly in the following points :
1-Highly significant genotypic differences were obtained for all characters studied in both F1 and F2, except for seed index in the F1 in 1971 season which showed insignificant genotypic differences.
2- General combining ability accounted for the major part of genetic variation, and was highly significant for all characters studied in the three experiments.
