Abstract
A descriptive study was done for JJ6 selected cases of gastroenteritis below the age of 5 years in urban and rural health centres namely at the pediatric out-patient clinic in Mansoura University and EL-Baklia rural health unit. besides 50 cases from a private cli¬nic. to study the various factors affecting morbidity and mortality of gastroenteritis. All data were collee cted. tabulated and statistically analysed. The present study shows that the majority of c~ses were among the age group below 2 years (80.3%). Nearly the same percentage of males a4d females (50.5% and 49.5% respectively) attended the three centres. Most of cases were the first and the second born (51%). )8.1% of cases were breast fed. while the introduction of for¬mulae & cereals to the diet was associated with increase in the incidence of gastroenteritis. Most of cases were related to families having 2 or J children, which is against what we expected. About ~ of the cases were of low income families. llhe majority of mothers of the cases were illiterate (81.1%), housewives
